Turning it around

BEFORE


Waking up feeling sluggish and hung-over was becoming an all too regular occurrence for John Cross. An unhealthy lifestyle was the norm and the consequences until now, were not even a consideration. That was about to change.

My health was failing and after three weeks of a blood pressure averaging 170/100mmHg my doctor decided to place me on medication to control this dangerously high reading.
I believed that I could manage this problem through lifestyle change: breaking the cycle of takeaways, late nights, and the sedentary lifestyle that was having a detrimental effect on my body.
The 12-week BodyBlitz Challenge was the catalyst I needed to get my life back on track. At first I doubted my ability to achieve a change of any significance in only 12 weeks, and this was not helped by the odd knocker who was quick to remind me that I was on the wrong side of 40 to be transforming my body in such a short time. However, there was a point to prove to family and friends and if I could make a real difference then others might be encouraged, and I could help them achieve similar goals.
I began researching and discovered a programme of aerobics, weight-training and diet that would help me achieve my desired goals. I finally learnt the difference between carbohydrates and protein and the importance of eating the right foods at the right time.
My goals had now been set, and for the next twelve weeks my routine became disciplined and focused. Having said that, I didn’t totally deprive myself of all things bad… there was the occasional night out. I wanted to prove that the desired changes could be achieved through balanced and sensible lifestyle change, and not through total deprivation of all things fun and tasty.
I began noticing change, which encouraged me to persist. The benefits I have gained from the 12 week BodyBlitz Challenge have been fantastic to say the least. From a physical point of view, I have lost 13kg in overall body weight, my blood pressure has lowered from a life threatening 170/100 to 115/65 (without medication), and my resting heart rate first thing in the morning has dropped from 76 beats/minute to 48 beats/minute. An added bonus to all this is, I no longer snore. From a psychological point of view: I have increased self esteem, confidence and enthusiasm for life.
I have spent plenty of time reflecting on my unfit days where I lacked motivation and this is definitely my first step on the road to a positive lifestyle change. IM

Training Split
Monday: Chest, legs
Tuesday: Abs, swim 2–3 km
Wednesday: Shoulders, triceps
Thursday: Abs, swim 2–3 km
Friday: Back, biceps
Saturday: Abs, swim 2–3 km
Sunday: Long walk, surf, play ball etc.
Diet
Upon Waking: Protein shake
Breakfast: Rolled oats with banana
Midmorning: Mini quiche/piece of fruit/green tea
Lunch: Salad sandwich or pasta dish
Midafternoon: Tuna on Vita Wheat, Piece of Fruit
Dinner: Fish/chicken/steak with veggies/salad

Note: Drink at least 5 litres of water a day; 1 protein shake immediately post gym/swim
